Elden (The Fire)
A Historical Musical Theatre in Røros
30 July to 8 August 2009
Discover pure magic on a late summer night. The play Elden is staged in the most spectacular outdoor theatre environment in Scandinavia - the slag heaps of Røros. Let yourself be captured!
In the year 1718, we witness the celebration of Midsummer’s Eve in Sweden. The warm summer night promises only happiness, no sorrows, to the young couple Ellen and Kalle. One day, Kalle receives a letter – he is drafted to war and must go to neighbouring Norway to fight. Kalle will soon experience how it feels to kill a fellow human.
The following winter, Kalle finds himself in the freezing mining town of Røros. The women who encounter the Swedish soldiers when they besiege this little town are as fierce and proud as the nature surrounding them.
The piercing winter winds and the whipping snow flurries are devastating. The Swedish General Armfeldt leads his soldiers into an inconceivable tragedy when he decides to retreat across the Tydal Mountains. Three thousand soldiers die because of the biting cold winter conditions.
Back in Sweden, Ellen longs for Kalle, but her calls for him are unanswered. The great Nordic war crushes her dreams of a future with her lover, but her heart harbours the fire of love...
The musical theatre Elden is directed by award-winning director Marit Moum Aune and choreographed by Norway’s prima ballerina Ingrid Lorentzen. Written by Arnfinn Strømmevold and Bertil Reithaug.
